Man United confirm Greenwood is among players RETAINED by the club

Manchester United confirm Mason Greenwood is on their retained list of players, despite still being under internal investigation at the club, as they announce seven departures

  • Mason Greenwood has been named on Manchester United’s retained list
  • He is still suspended after assault and attempted rape charges were dropped
  • His inclusion does not imply an outcome in the club’s ongoing investigation

Mason Greenwood is on the list of players being retained by Manchester United, while David de Gea is the most notable omission as talks continue over a new contract.

It’s understood that Greenwood’s inclusion reflects the fact that he is under contract at Old Trafford until 2025, and is not an indication of the outcome of an internal club investigation after the Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges of attempted rape and assault against him in February.

United still haven’t made a decision over Greenwood’s future, but Mail Sport revealed last week that one of the options under consideration is loaning the 21-year-old to a foreign club next season – with Italy, Turkey or Spain among the options.

Sending him overseas would allow themselves a further period of reflection, while also giving them a chance to gauge public opinion along with Greenwood’s mental health and performance levels.

Greenwood, who has two years left on his £75,000-a-week deal at Old Trafford, was suspended by United when the allegations were first made last January and he remains out of the picture.

Manchester United have confirmed Mason Greenwood is among the players retained by the club this summer

The likelihood of the Bradford-born academy product heading to another Premier League club is remote.

And while United have had offers from Turkey, Greenwood may prefer to play at a higher level. As such, a move to Italy or Spain could be on the cards.

However, the optics of bringing Greenwood onboard may pose a problem for some ownership groups. Those with knowledge of the situation say a move to an American-owned club, such as AC Milan, might prove difficult.

There would also have to be an agreement over salary. Greenwood has been on full pay throughout the process.

United are also exploring the option of sending Greenwood on loan next season

Meanwhile, De Gea is not on the list because he will become a free agent at the end of his contract on June 30 unless the Spanish goalkeeper can agree terms over a new deal.

A United spokesman said: ‘Discussions remain open with David over a potential new contract.’

United hope to sign a new goalkeeper this summer regardless of De Gea’s contract situation, while Dean Henderson is expected to make a permanent move to Nottingham Forest.

Another two United keepers, Tom Heaton and Nathan Bishop have had their contracts extended, and so have defenders Rhys Bennett and Ethan Laird. Under-21 player-coach Tom Huddlestone and forward Mateo Mejia have been offered new deals.

United confirmed that Phil Jones is leaving Old Trafford after 12 years along with Axel Tuanzebe, Ethan Galbraith and Di’Shon Bernard. Eric Hanbury, Charlie Wellens and Manni Norkett are leaving the academy.
