Man United boss Ten Hag says he 'can't ignore' errors from his side

Erik ten Hag urges his Manchester United players to cut out their mistakes… with recent errors from David de Gea and Luke Shaw in defeats to West Ham and Brighton denting their top-four chances

  • David de Gea was at fault for West Ham’s winner against Manchester United
  • Luke Shaw previously conceded an injury-time penalty against Brighton
  • Those errors have allowed Liverpool to close the gap to them in the table

Erik ten Hag has urged his Manchester United players to cut out the individual mistakes in their game as they look to secure a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.

David de Gea was at fault for West Ham’s winner at the London Stadium last Sunday when he allowed Said Benrahma’s tame shot to bounce over his outstretched right hand.

Three days earlier, Luke Shaw conceded an injury-time penalty at Brighton with a needless handball as United again lost 1-0.

Ten Hag accepts that mistakes happen in football but is concerned that a loss of focus was to blame in both cases.

The Dutchman hopes that a free week for the first time since September and opportunity to work with his players at Carrington has helped refocus the players and eradicate any more errors.

De Gea, in particular, has come under fire for his latest blunder as talks continue over a new contract for the Spanish goalkeeper on reduced terms.

Asked how De Gea is, Ten Hag replied: ‘Good as well. We can’t ignore it but individual mistakes are part of football and there was in the Brighton game also a big individual mistake. But sometimes it’s happening. It shouldn’t happen, when you are in the right focus it will not happen, that is part of the reset of this week.’

The United boss also confirmed that he sees a future for Amad Diallo at Old Trafford following the youngster’s impressive season on loan at Sunderland.

‘Yes, of course,’ said Ten Hag. ‘We loan such players to make development and progress to bring them back, that is the aim of the loan.

‘They are really strong. We mentor them, we follow them, we have communication over the season, especially Darren Fletcher invests a lot in such a process. The aim is to bring them back as a better player with experience.’
