Man City woke up and chose violence – but then given scare of their lives

Manchester City’s four-goal demolition of Leicester City inside 30 minutes of their thrilling Boxing Day fixture prompted fans to joke the Blues “woke up and chose violence.”

Kevin De Bruyne’s opener in the first five minutes set the tone for the rest of the half as City scored two penalties, both given away by Youri Tielemans, either side of an Ilkay Gundogan tap-in.

Viewers were left stunned at the devastating manner in which Pep Guardiola’s side blitzed the Foxes with ease.

City were then given the scare of their lives as Leicester scored three in quick succession after half-time, though they managed to see out the storm with a 6-3 victory.

De Bruyne rifled one in in trademark fashion to start a gripping game, before Riyad Mahrez tucked in a penalty 14 minutes in to double the home side’s lead.

Gundogan grabbed the third after Kasper Schmeichel parried Joao Cancelo’s cross into the German’s path for a tap-in.

Next on the scoresheet was Raheem Sterling, who capped off a dominant first-half for Guardiola’s side after being fouled in the box by converting his own penalty.

Fans were left in awe of the performance, with one Twitter user even joking City “woke up and chose violence.”

Leicester scored what appeared to be a consolation goal when a swift counter-attack was finished by James Maddison in the 55th minute.

Brendan Rodgers’ side were given hope of a comeback with Ademola Lookman’s goal just four minutes later, before Kelechi Iheanacho tapped in a ball which had ricocheted off the bar from a Maddison strike to make it 4-3.

City’s fears were reaching boiling point when Aymeric Laporte rose to restore their two-goal cushion with a looping header in the 69th minute.

The league leaders reasserted their dominance by making it 6-3 minutes from time courtesy of a Sterling tap-in, with Guardiola’s men being able to let out a huge sigh of relief.
