Man City target unhappy Real Madrid legend Modric in surprise January transfer

Manchester City are reportedly weighing up a move for Luka Modric as his contract stand-off with Real Madrid rumbles on.

The veteran remains an integral member of the Los Blancos midfield, even at the age of 36, but is yet to agree terms over an extension to his current deal.

The Croatian has establish himself as one of the best midfielder's in world football in recent years and was crowned winner of the 2018 Ballon d'Or following a stellar year with club and country.

Modric's current contract expires at the end of this season and despite claims he hopes to retire in the Spanish capital, the former Tottenham midfielder could well depart in the summer, as City are reportedly waiting in the wings.

According to El Nacional, the 36-year-old has grown 'tired of being underestimated' by club president Florentino Perez, who remains reluctant to offer the midfielder his desired deal of a two-year extension.

The Spanish outlet reports that Modric feels he should be rewarded for his loyalty to the La Liga table-toppers having established himself as a club legend following a £30million move from Spurs back in 2013.

However, talks over fresh terms have hit a number of snags in recent months due to the club's policy of only offering one-year extensions to players over 30.

The Croat opted to stay with the 13-time European champions this summer despite interest from Inter Milan, but it now looks as though a move could be on the card, with Pep Guardiola's City waiting in the wings.

The Premier League champions are said to be preparing to offer Modric 'an interesting future' and the player himself is believed to see 'no harm' in moving to the Etihad, should he fail to reach an agreement with Real.

Modric has amassed over 400 appearance for Los Blancos since joining eight-and-a-half years ago and is eager to prepare for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by playing at a club of the highest level.
