Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has been spotted in disguise attempting to become poker's world champion.

The ex-Argentina striker has been snapped taking part in the $10,000 buy-in world championship event at the annual World Series of Poker – but has kept his presence quiet with a sneaky disguise.

Aguero, now 35, retired from football in 2021 after suffering chest pains during Barcelona’s home draw with Alaves, only his fourth game for the club. He was diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia and called time on his career in December 2021.

The City legend has always enjoyed poker and has regularly been spotted playing during his career, but Aguero was this week attempting to become world champion.

Aguero entered Day 1C of the World Series of Poker tournament that has just over 10,000 players participating.

And he enjoyed a successful first day which saw him finish with 87,000 in chips from a starting stack of 60,000 – around the average stack size. In fact, his stack was bigger than what former champions Scott Blumstein, Espen Jorstad and Ryan Reiss could end the day with.

Aguero also had more chips than Justin Bonomo, who is top of the all-time money list for tournament poker winnings with $62million.

But his dream was ended on the third day of the event, when he eventually lost his chip stack, just short of the money-winning places.

He wrote on Instagram: "The tournament is over. A nice experience that I will never forget. Next year again!

"I'm going to play another main event, so exciting."

The winner of the tournament will be crowned in a week's time after the 11th day of action.

One other sportsperson remains in with a shot of victory, as boxer Ryan Garcia boasts a healthy stack heading into the fourth day, where only about 15% of entrants remain.

Aguero joined Pep Guardiola’s side ahead of the Champions League final against Inter Milan despite leaving the Etihad two years earlier when he moved to Catalunya at the end of his contract in Manchester.

He was also present in Qatar as Argentina lifted the World Cup for the first time since 1986, appearing as an unofficial fan and posing with the trophy alongside his former national compatriots.
