Man City keeper Ederson reveals he wears the SAME pair of pants for EVERY game across the season in a bizarre superstition that started with Benfica in 2015… and he insists ‘it’s working’ after seven titles in eight years!
- Goalkeeper Ederson has revealed that he wears just one pair of pants per season
- The Brazilian has won seven titles in eight seasons at Benfica and Man City
- He will be hoping this year’s pants bring him luck in the Champions League
Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has revealed the bizarre superstition that he believes has helped him to success throughout his career.
The Brazilian keeper has already enjoyed a trophy-laden career at the age of 29 – and he is currently in the midst of his most successful season as a player.
Man City have already claimed the Premier League title and they could be on their way to a Treble, if they beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final on Saturday, followed by Inter Milan in the Champions League final next week.
Most players have their own superstitions, but Ederson’s is much different to most.
In an interview with TNT Sports carried by Record, he admitted to wearing the same pair of pants across the season, before throwing them away for a new pair to wear across the following campaign.
Man City keeper Ederson reveals he wears just one pair of pants per season in a bizarre superstition which he has kept since his days playing for Portuguese side Benfica
The superstition has led to great success as he has won seven titles in eight seasons
Ederson won back-to-back titles at Benfica before winning five leagues in six years at Man City
The Brazilian international said: ‘I have a superstition of wearing the same underwear in every game. It’s always the same one. People here at home even know, they keep it in their corner – it’s one per season, because it wears out a lot.
‘The only one (superstition) I have. It’s been with (me since) Benfica. In the first year, it was like this: when I played, I wore it. And in the last eight years I’ve won seven national titles. It’s been working.’
Ederson won back-to-back titles with Benfica in his two years with the Portuguese club. Since joining Man City, he has won five titles across his six seasons at the Etihad – only losing the title once to Liverpool in the 2019-20 campaign.
He has also won the FA Cup on one occasion and the Carabao Cup in four different seasons since joining the club. However his ‘lucky’ pants haven’t proven to be that way in the Champions League.
That could all change though when City face Inter Milan in Istanbul on June 10 – as they look to win the trophy for the first time in the club’s history.
Among other superstitions in football include Man City team mate Jack Grealish’s decision to wear low socks and tiny shin pads during games which goes back to his time at Aston Villa.
Chelsea legend John Terry revealed his superstition issues in 2019, saying he would do everything from ‘wee in the same urinal’ to ‘count the lamp posts from his house to Stamford Bridge.’
Leicester striker Jamie Vardy revealed in his 2016 autobiography ‘Jamie Vardy: From Nowhere, My Story’ that he drank port out of a Lucozade bottle on the night before every game.
