Man City got relegated a year after winning title – and went down as top scorers

Pep Guardiola’s record-breaking Manchester City team aren’t the first Citizens side in history to be smashing top-flight records.

City’s side now resembles that of a near indomitable side in English football as they look to win a third consecutive Premier League trophy this season.

Since Guardiola’s arrival in England, the Citizens have lifted the Premier League trophy four times, including a record breaking 100 points campaign in the 2017/18 season which saw them dubbed the Centurions.

But before the days of the Etihad dominance City were breaking records with their 1937/38 First Division campaign continuing to catch the eye for the wrong reasons.

After beating Charlton Athletic and Arsenal to win the 1936/37 First Division title and scoring 107 goals to win their maiden top flight title, City saw their fortunes flipped on its head with Wilf Wild’s side relegated from the top flight despite netting the most amount of goals in the division for a second year running.

Will these records ever be broke? Let us know in the comments section below

The FA Charity Shield winners and reigning champions of England were relegated alongside West Bromwich Albion but finished above the Baggies on goal difference with Wild’s side having a plus three record due to their continued goal scoring exploits.

City returned to the second tier whilst Grimsby Town, Portsmouth, Birmingham City and Stoke City all survived the drop by just two points.

The following season ultimately ended in disappointment at Maine Road with the Citizens finishing 5th and missing out on an immediate return to the First Division with Wild’s side having to wait for the resumption of the Football League following World War Two to achieve promotion again, winning the 1946/47 league title.

City remain the only team to be relegated from the First Division having scored the most goals in a season, and the only side to go down as First Division champions although Leicester City gave it a good go in the 2016/17 season under Claudio Ranieri.
