Man City get green light for £100m January splurge despite looking unstoppable

Pep Guardiola has reportedly been given the green light by Manchester City to splash £100million on signings in the January transfer window.

Man City are unlikely to sign any players before the current summer window closes on Thursday, despite their £104m spend being one of the lowest in recent years. They have brought in world class striker Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, Sergio Gomez and Julian Alvarez in recent months.

But the money recouped from outgoings amounts to a whopping £250m since January 2022, with the sale of Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko raking in much of that total.

And according to The Sun, the club have now assured Guardiola that he has funds available to spend however he deems fit in the upcoming window as he looks to defend his Premier League crown.

The timing presents an opportunity for Pep to scout any eye-catching talent from the Qatar World Cup, which begins in November and ends on December 18.

Guardiola’s squad is currently stretched thin with a core group of just 18 senior players. That means academy starlets like Cole Palmer and Rico Lewis could be called into action as an arduous season takes its toll and potentially leads to injuries.

Yet even 21-year-old Palmer was linked with a season-long loan move away from the Etihad earlier this week after Borussia Dortmund expressed interest. A move is still uncertain due to the versatility the youngster brings to Guardiola's squad, both as a winger and as a No.10.

Still, the Spanish manager will be pleased with the performances delivered by his players in the early stages of the new campaign. City are currently unbeaten and second in the table behind Arsenal, having come back from two goals down against Crystal Palace to win 4-2 on Saturday courtesy of an emphatic Haaland hat-trick.
