Man City face Barca in special friendly despite season starting three weeks ago

Manchester City and Barcelona will clash at the Nou Camp in a friendly on Wednesday evening to continue their fight against ASL.

ASL (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a neurodegenerative disease that currently has no cure, with a life expectancy of four to six years. In 2020, former Barcelona player and close friend of Pep Guardiola Juan Carlos Unzue was diagnosed with the disease.

Unzue said after announcing his diagnosis: "I insist I am coping well. I feel privileged to be able to have lived the life I have and now I feel privileged about what I will be able to do about ALS, which is a disease that anyone can get."

Barcelona are two games into their La Liga campaign – and Xavi's side have drawn with Rayo Vallecano before beating Real Sociedad over the weekend.

Pep Guardiola's side are also unbeaten, having looked imperious against West Ham and Bournemouth. But the champions showed the first chinks in their armour against Newcastle over the weekend in a heart-stopping 3-3 draw.

City had to fight back from two goals down to escape the northeast with a hard-fought point.

Ahead of the clash, Unzue said: “I conveyed my enthusiasm for this match and gave my approval from the first minute. What I felt in that moment was priceless.

With your commitment, you have shown the world that football is not just a business and a weekly show, but a promise and friendship. I hope we can fill the Camp Nou with fans on matchday.”

“The money will go to a platform that aims to achieve a cure for ALS through clinical trials. With the money, we hope to bring more clinical trials to our country and can be done in more countries.”
