Manchester City could incredibly repeat the mistake which saw teenage prospect Jadon Sancho leave for Borussia Dortmund in 2017, according to reports. The now-England winger turned down a professional contract and moved to Germany to further his development.

Sancho scored 50 goals and registered 64 assists in just 137 appearances. His form earned him a blockbuster £73million move to City’s fierce local rivals Manchester United.

City might not have entirely missed Sancho. They have won three of the four Premier League titles since Sancho’s departure and have broken several goalscoring records.

But keeping the now 22-year-old might have saved them millions instead of signing one of their expensive forwards.

And the Eithad Stadium outfit could reportedly replicate the error, with Dortmund interested in another of City’s young stars.

According to Football Insider, City turned down a £15m bid for striker Liam Delap towards the end of the summer window.

Delap, the son of former Stoke City midfielder Rory, was signed from Derby County in 2019 and has earned a reputation as a frequent goalscorer at academy level.

The 18-year-old scored a remarkable 24 goals in 20 appearances in City’s title-winning Premier League 2 campaign last term.

He managed seven goals in 11 appearances for their U18 side the season prior.

Delap has also represented England at each level up to Under-18, scoring eight times in a combined 17 caps. His form at academy level has earned him three senior appearances for City, and he scored in his debut in an EFL Cup tie with Bournemouth last season.

Dortmund were clearly hoping to sign a young forward during the summer transfer window. They eventually landed the former Arsenal prospect Donyell Malen from PSV Eindhoven.

Malen had scored 55 goals in 116 appearances for the Dutch side.

Meanwhile, Sancho has endured a slow start to life at United. He has failed to either score or assist in his six appearances so far.

A lack of a pre-season could be a contributing factor. Sancho was granted an extended summer break having participated in Euro 2020.

United icon Roy Keane jumped to the defence of Sancho, insisting that the winger will soon settle into life at Old Trafford.

“He’ll be fine,” the former club captain said on Sky Sports while working as a pundit for United’s 2-1 win over West Ham on Sunday.

“He’s been at the club what, two months? There’s been a lot of changes, new players coming to the club – give the kid a break.

“He’s still learning his trade, he’s still a young player, big expectations.

“He’s come to a new club where he’s certainly not going to be star man, he’ll be down the pecking order and he’s got to adapt to all that. Give him a chance.”
