Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has said he cannot make a true judgment on the European Super League until he has all the facts. City are one of six Premier League clubs that were named as founders of the new competition.
City will be joined by Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham from England.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan are the other teams confirmed for the European Super League.
Guardiola is not in favour of closed leagues though and wants proper competition, an indication he is not in support of the competition in its current guise.
He said: “It is an embryo that is not yet breathing. That is the reality. We’re going to play the Champions League next week and try to reach the final and next season we’re going to playing European competitions because we deserve it and won it on the pitch.
“The players have to be focused on Aston Villa. Like all the managers said, we did our job.
“The right people have to clarify, they have the obligation and duty as soon as possible to come out all around the world and clarify what the situation is and why they took their decisions.
“Ajax have four or five Champions Leagues but will not be there? They have to clarify that for all of us. Every club defends its position.
“Don’t be cynical. Everyone makes their own interests. When you talk about the Premier League and UEFA, they look after their interests. UEFA have also failed. They have to communicate and be in touch before.
“They have to clarify because I don’t have all the information to give my opinion. We fought about five substitutions and every team looked at themselves.”
Guardiola is adamant there must be an element of competition where clubs are not guaranteed to be in the European Super League every season.
He added: “It’s not sport when there is no relation between effort and success, it’s not sport.
“It’s not sport if it doesn’t matter if you lose. I’ve said many times I want the best competition as possible.
“It’s not fair if teams fight at the top and cannot qualify.”
City are on course to win the Premier League this season and are also in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
At this point, UEFA have yet to confirm if the competition will continue in light of the European Super League news.
No club owners in England have yet to open up on why they have opted to join the competition with managers instead forced to answer questions.
There is also a Premier League meeting between the 14 teams who are not in the European Super League being held today with news expected later.
