Maguire retrial date set three years after assault and bribery conviction

Harry Maguire's retrial date has been set for February 7 – more than three-and-a-half years after his conviction for assault and attempted bribery in Greece.

The Manchester United captain was arrested in Mykonos during a family holiday in August 2020 and spent two nights in a cell before being released.

He was handed a suspended jail sentence of 21 months and 10 days after being found guilty of assaulting police, resisting arrest and attempted bribery.

Maguire launched an appeal, which led to the conviction being quashed and referred to a higher court for retrial. The hearing was initially delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic but has now been set for February 2024. He isn't expected to appear in person.

The England star said he thought he was being kidnapped as he was arrested after a brawl outside a nightclub on the Greek island.

Maguire also said the altercation started because his sister Daisy was injected with an unknown substance by two strangers.

He stated that despite wanting to take her to a hospital, he was taken to a police station where he was beaten, and, worried he was part of a kidnap attempt, he then tried to flee.

"Some people will believe me, some people won’t," he told The Times last year. "But one thing I would say about Mykonos is that I have no regrets.

"I don’t worry about what the outcome is going to be. I don’t worry about anything to do with it because my conscience is so clear about what happened that night. The people who were there that night, there were nine of us, we all understand what went on and what happened."

The 30-year-old England star, who made just eight starts in the Premier League for Erik ten Hag's side last season, is expected to quit United this summer.
