‘It is a good vote of confidence and I think he did really well the other night.’

The 29-year-old played a full 90 minutes against Italy on Friday night and performed reasonably well despite England losing 1-0.

‘He will go out tonight and hopefully play well. Luke Shaw for Saks is more understandable. Luke Shaw is more natural and will give more balance and it might help.’

England go into tonight’s game in desperate need of a win after failing to win any of their last five games.

If they fail to win tonight, Southgate’s men will start the World Cup in November having not won a game since March.

A poor result tonight will pile the pressure on Gareth Southgate, who has been criticised heavily in recent months despite taking England to the latter stages of both major tournaments he has led them in.
