James Maddison has admitted the latest international break has come at an ‘annoying time’ with Tottenham having moved to the top of the Premier League after a fine start to the campaign.
Tottenham moved to the top of the table with a 1-0 victory over Luton on Saturday, with Maddison providing the assist for Micky van de Ven’s winning goal.
The result maintained Spurs unbeaten start to the Premier League season, which has included wins over Sheffield United and Liverpool since last month’s international break.
Maddison told BBC Radio 5Live that representing for England remains the ‘pinnacle’, but admitted the break was frustrating from a club perspective as it halted Tottenham’s momentum.
The midfielder also believes he is at the ‘top of his game’ after providing two goals and five assists since his £45m summer move from Leicester.

‘Potentially, I feel really,’ Maddison said.
‘You would never, ever not want to represent your country, because I always say it is the pinnacle when I am away with England, but if I’ve got my club head on, we’re in good form, we’re in good momentum, we are unbeaten in the league in eight.
‘We came back after the last international break and hit the ground running again and won late against Sheffield United in brilliant circumstances.
‘Hopefully we can do the same off the back of this one and continue the form.’
Maddison will be aiming to add to his four England caps when the Three Lions face Australia in a friendly at Wembley on Friday.
The Three Lions also host reigning European champions Italy in their latest Euro 2024 qualifier next Tuesday.
Three of Maddison’s caps have come for England this year, after the midfielder had made his debut back in 2019.
Maddison was included in the Three Lions squad for last year’s World Cup in Qatar, but did not make an appearance in their run to the quarter-finals as he battled with a knee injury.

The 26-year-old believes he is now in the best form of his career and feels at home in the England set-up.
‘Over the past year I have worked really hard and played some good stuff, I think.
‘Obviously, I have moved to Tottenham. I feel as though I could potentially be in the best form I have ever been in really.
‘And now I feel at home here. I would be happy to play anywhere, when you are wearing the Three Lions there is no feeling like it to be honest.
‘If that means I am playing slightly out of position, then so be it. I couldn’t care less as long as I am out there.
‘I will try to do my best and bring the qualities that I have to any position that I play in, whether that is in the middle or left wing or right wing, wherever.’
