Luton Town star Teden Mengi was left blushing after appearing to briefly forget he left Manchester United.

The centre-back, 21, joined United's academy aged just six, working his way through the youth ranks but only being rewarded with two senior appearances for the Red Devils, both coming in the Europa League.

He joined newly-promoted Luton for an undisclosed fee towards the end of the summer transfer window in search of regular game time, returning to his former club for their Premier League clash on Saturday (November 11).

Upon entering Old Trafford, Mengi greeted a familiar security guard before heading into the home dressing room – re-emerging several seconds later with a smile on his face as he crossed the corridor to join his team-mates in the away section.

He made sure to put on the right kit before playing the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 defeat for Rob Edwards' side, whose solid defensive work was undone by Victor Lindelof's second-half strike.

Speaking about the departure from his boyhood club, Mengi last week told Sky Sports: "I've called United home for a very, very long time, they've been family for a very long time but I've moved on to take a different route in my career and try and get to where I want to get to in my career and that was the decision to come to Luton."

Explaining why it was Luton he joined, he continued: "Just a different challenge which I didn't think I was getting at United. A chance to play in the first team, a chance to really showcase what I can do, what I know that I'm capable of doing.

"Again, no disrespect to Manchester United but that's just how it works sometimes. There's people in your position. But after many conversations with the manager, we both felt it was the right decision for me to come here.

"Obviously nothing comes for free, you have to work for everything in life and I feel like I've worked for my position in the team and just to go and express myself really."
