Luka Modric blasts 'disaster' referee after Croatia's defeat to Argentina

Luka Modric was left fuming with referee Daniele Orsato after Croatia’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, labelling him a ‘disaster’.

Croatia were beaten 3-0 by the South American side, with Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez scoring twice and Lionel Messi netting from the penalty spot.

Alvarez won that penalty after 34 minutes, a decision which was hotly debated by those watching on, and Modric does not think that his goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic had fouled the forward.

In fact, the veteran midfielder felt the referee’s performance as a whole was as bad as it gets as he chose to speak out against him, when he usually would not.

Argentina was a fair winner of the game, they were better, they deserved to win, but these things have to be mentioned, I generally don’t do them, but today they have to be done,

‘I don’t like to talk about referees, but this is one of the worst,’ Modric said, via TyCSports. ‘I don’t have a good memory of him, he’s a disaster.

‘For me it wasn’t a penalty. Despite this, I don’t want to detract from Argentina. The penalty killed us. We have to recover for third place and win that game.’

Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic echoed his captain’s thoughts, saying: ‘We lost by a penalty, but it is what it is. Both situations seem incredible to me, first that he did not give a corner and then that.

‘I never talk about the referees, they are capital errors and it cost us defeat.’

Orsato is an experienced referee from Italy, with the 47-year-old taking charge of the 2020 Champions League final, while Modric will have been aware of him from Real Madrid’s semi-final second leg in the Champions League last year.
