Luis Suarez believes Erling Haaland has the type of talent that ‘will define an era’ as he offers his thoughts on the Borussia Dortmund superstar. Along with Kylian Mbappe, Haaland is the most sought after forward in world football.

Since joining the Bundesliga giants at the start of last year, Haaland has continued to enhance his reputation with a stunning 49 goals in 49 games.

The 20-year-old is on the radar of some of Europe’s biggest clubs and although Liverpool aren’t expected to go for a big-money target, they have been tentatively linked with Haaland and Mbappe.

Mbappe is out of contract with Paris Saint-Germain next summer and is yet to agree to terms on a new deal.

Both would likely cost an astronomical fee, but Reds icon Suarez believes Haaland has the slight edge over his contemporary.

“He [Haaland] is a great player, he’s at a spectacular level, he has an admirable physical strength,” Suarez told Gerard Romero on Twitch.

“He’s one of the best No.9s in the world and will define an era. I’m a bit more in favour of Haaland, but Mbappe is at a great level.”

That view is shared by another Liverpool legend, with Jamie Carragher suggesting he would go for the Norwegian over Mbappe.

“I mean I’ve watched the clips today and I’ve always gone with Mbappe before, but there’s something about Haaland,” he told Sky Sports last week.

“He looks mad, but in a good way. You know when you just think, he doesn’t care about anything.

“I mean I’ve watched the clips today and I’ve always gone with Mbappe before, but there’s something about Haaland,” he told Sky Sports last week.

As for Suarez, he brought up his 500th career goal last weekend, helping Atletico Madrid to a vital La Liga win.

He joins Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski as the only active players to reach that landmark.

Suarez has enjoyed a fine first season with Atleti after Barcelona terminated his contract during the summer.

The win over Alaves on Sunday helped cement Suarez’s side at the top of the table and has admitted he was fortunate to get another move in Spain’s top-flight.

He added: “I think I was lucky to change team in the same league, the same referees, knowing my teammates, I didn’t change much.

“I’m happy to be helping the team to be up there.”

After bringing up goal number 500, Suarez, who scored 82 times for Liverpool, paid tribute to the Anfield faithful for the role they played in his achievement.

In a long letter, he thanked all of his ex-clubs and when it came to Liverpool, Suarez wrote: “And Liverpool? Liverpool was special. The connection with the fans inspired me to rise to the challenge of playing in such a competitive league.”

Addressing his fans, he went on to add: “You may not know it, but you played your part in every goal I have scored so far.

“And today, I thank you: every single fan who has supported my teams over the years, from Montevideo to Madrid, from 0 to 500. And beyond…”
