Antoine Griezmann’s red card against Liverpool in the second half had almost everyone inside Wanda Metropolitano in disbelief. It was a pulsating opening 45 minutes between the two sides after Atletico wiped out Liverpool’s 2-0 lead to go in at the break level.
Griezmann had been at the heart of everything for the hosts, scoring both their goals with well-taken finishes.
More of the same was expected in the second half, although Jurgen Klopp moved to cut back Atletico’s attacking prowess by bringing on Fabinho.
The Brazilian’s arrival did enable Liverpool to look more solid at the back, but the game still ebbed and flowed in both halves.
But the match was turned on it’s head just seven minutes into the second half when Griezmann was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Firmino.
The France international was guilty of raising his boot to Firmino’s head while trying to bring the ball down.
Firmino hit the deck in agony after the collision and German referee Daniel Siebert showed no hesitation in sending Griezmann off.
Replays appeared to show that Griezmann always had his eyes on the ball, but Peter Walton made it clear that he supported the referee’s decision.
“The pictures we’re seeing the foot is clearly high,” he said.
“Yes, Firmino is ducking down slightly but unfortunately for Griezmann he’s gone through with a straight leg, there’s force there and it is correct, it’s serious foul play and he should be sent off for this.”
The Atletico bench clearly didn’t agree though with Simeone seen standing in disbelief at the decision.
The Argentine head coach was seen standing still, holding his arms out wide and cameras soon switched to Suarez who cut a similar picture while warming up down the touchline.
