Luis Rubiales’ mum ‘prepared to die’ on hunger strike as pressure mounts

‘This is unacceptable’ – Alexia Putellas after Luis Rubiales refuses to resign

Luis Rubiales’ mother, who locked herself in a church and declared a hunger strike earlier this week, claims that she is prepared to die in search of justice. The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president is facing calls to step down after planting an unsolicited kiss on Jenni Hermoso following the Women’s World Cup final.

Rubiales defended his actions during an Extraordinary General Assembly called last Friday, despite Hermoso claiming that the kiss was not consensual. As part of a long, drawn-out speech, the 46-year-old repeatedly shouted ‘I will not resign’.

Little by little, allies have started turning against Rubiales, who has been suspended by FIFA for 90 days and replaced by Pedro Rocha on an interim basis. RFEF regional presidents have now called on Rubiales to step down after a recent crisis meeting.

The Spaniard’s mother, Angeles Bejar, took drastic action on Monday by locking herself in a church and declaring a hunger strike.

One day later, the 72-year-old’s intentions remain clear as she told a Spanish TV station: “I will stay here as long as my body holds out. I don’t mind dying for justice because my son is a decent person and it’s not fair what they’re doing.”

Bejar remains inside the church with sister-in-law Mari Carmen, and both are believed to have access to drinking water. A doctor is expected to visit later on Tuesday for a check on the pensioner’s wellbeing.

Every member of Spain’s national team, who beat England in the Women’s World Cup final earlier this month, has said that they will not play another match at international level while Rubiales remains in charge of the Spanish FA.

RFEF regional presidents have advised the former Hamilton Academical defender to resign after ‘seriously damaging’ the image of Spanish football. Rubiales has not been seen in public since his bombshell press conference last Friday.

In another sudden twist, women’s team manager Jorge Vilda is reportedly set to be sacked. The RFEF are believed to be preparing documentation relating to the 42-year-old’s dismissal.

Vilda struck out at Rubiales earlier this week, saying: “I regret deeply that the victory of Spanish women’s football has been harmed by the inappropriate behaviour that our until now top leader, Luis Rubiales, has carried out and that he himself has recognised.”
