Louise Quinn insists Ireland can make it out of the group of death

Louise Quinn insists Republic of Ireland have ‘total belief’ that they can make it out of the World Cup’s group of death after narrow defeat to Australia in opener

  • Republic of Ireland slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Australia on Thursday
  • Ireland had their chances in the match but failed to take them and were punished
  • With a little more attacking intent, they could still make the round of 16

Veteran defender Louise Quinn says that the belief of Irish players that they can emerge from this World Cup’s group of death has only grown in the wake of the narrow 1-0 defeat to Australia.

Only Steph Catley’s expertly-taken penalty denied Ireland a famous result in Sydney on Thursday night but despite that setback, Quinn feels that Ireland remain in a good place ahead of Wednesday’s showdown with Olympic champions Canada in Perth.

‘We are very realistic and knows that it will be an incredibly hard job but for us, getting out of the group is something we always believe that was possible,’ the Birmingham City captain said.

‘Honestly, we totally believe in it, totally believe that we can actually get out of the group. It will take putting in more performances like that, and improving when we get into attacking positions, but we feel we can do it.’

Quinn had a strapped left ankle and a swollen eye after the Australia game while captain Katie McCabe had two fingers strapped after one of her many clashes with Hayley Raso, but neither player is a doubt for the second group game.

Ireland had a light recovery session in Brisbane’s Meakin Park yesterday and reported no injury concerns.

Meanwhile, Ireland’s next two group opponents, Canada and Nigeria, played out a goalless draw in a dramatic game in Melbourne.

Canada legend Christine Sinclair saw her second-half penalty saved while Nigeria’s Deborah Abiodun was sent off six minutes into stoppage time when VAR upgraded her challenge on Ashley Lawrence as a red card offence.
