Liverpool reportedly have a great interest in Aston Villa and Scotland star John McGinn.
The Athletic reveal that interest in the midfielder is “very real” and manager Jurgen Klopp has kept an eye on the player for quite some time.
Earlier this week, it was reported that McGinn, who played at Euro 2020 with Scotland, could be available for as little as £20m, but those rumours have been brushed off.
Villa, who don’t have any need to sell their best players, will be looking to get over double that fee, with £45m reported, something Liverpool aren’t keen to pay.
The report said that Klopp was particularly impressed by McGinn’s performances in Villa’s 7-2 win over Liverpool back in October 2020, and he even asked Andy Roberton if the midfielder “ever stops running”.
A move for a midfielder is unlikely this summer unless Liverpool can sell some players and the likes of Marko Grujic, Divock Origi, Harry Wilson and Neco Williams are all players that could possibly leave.
Wijnaldum left Anfield this year following the expiry of his contract and he agreed to a move to French side Paris Saint-Germain.
McGinn has impressed plenty in his first two years in the Premier League, with other clubs such as Manchester United taking an interest in the player.
Before Villa’s return to the Premier League, the legendary Alex Ferguson believed McGinn would make a good signing for the Red Devils, and given the player’s performances since, Ferguson wasn’t wrong.
Any interest in McGinn will come at a hefty price.
Would John McGinn be a good signing for Aston Villa? Let us know in the comments below.
His impressive performances, consistency and the fact that he signed a new five-year deal back in December mean that he will be difficult to prize away from Villa Park.
The Birmingham club are also in a good position to grow themselves, having secured an 11th place finish last season as well as completing the £40m signing of Emiliano Buendia from Norwich City.
Next, they will be hoping to claim a European place and owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens are adamant on keeping their best players at Villa Park.
