Liverpool’s injury issues laid bare as full extent of problems come to light

Liverpool players have missed a staggering 1029 days through injury this season.

The Reds have been unable to mount a meaningful title defence with several of the star players missing large chunks of the season.

Crystal Palace, whose players have missed 861 days, are second on the list.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson and Diogo Jota are among those to be sidelined for lengthy periods.

Jurgen Klopp has had to seek makeshift solutions for much of the season with his centre-half options being heavily hit.

It forced Liverpool to add reinforcements in January with Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak both arriving at Anfield.

In total injured Reds' stars have missed 204 league games – twice as many as Leicester City – the side with the second highest total in the top flight.

Alisson, Joel Matip and James Milner have also been injured for sustained periods this term.

Left-back Andy Robertson has said: "If you tell any team in world football that they're going to have 18 different partnerships in a season at centre-back, no team in the world deals with that, not one.

"Usually we have, for instance, Virg who's very vocal, we have Joey Gomez that leads by example, and Joel who leads by example. We've had Fabinho, Hendo.

"But now we've got Nat Phillips, who obviously wasn't here last season, he was out on loan. We've got (Ozan) Kabak who's a young lad who's just come in.

"We've got Ben Davies, who's been signed from a Championship club and needs to take time and big Rhys (Williams), of course."

Champions elect Manchester City have had to deal with the absence of Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne at points this season.

Their injuries have seen players miss out on 603 days.

Chelsea player's have been the league's luckiest team when it comes to injuries and illness missing just 276 days.
