Liverpool's FA Cup clash with Shrewsbury is ON – Krawietz in charge

Liverpool re-open their training ground and FA Cup clash against Shrewsbury is ON despite their Covid outbreak… with Jurgen Klopp’s assistant Peter Krawietz set to be THIRD boss in three games

  • Liverpool have suffered a number of Covid cases among staff and players
  • Positive tests led to their AXA training centre being temporarily closed
  • Game against Arsenal in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup was postponed
  • But the FA Cup clash with Shrewsbury Town will be going ahead on Sunday

Liverpool have reopened their first-team training centre after a 48-hour closure following a Covid outbreak among players and staff.

Preparations for Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie at home to League One side Shrewsbury will resume with assistant manager Peter Krawietz taking charge of the available players.

Krawietz will also undertake pre-match media duties with a press conference scheduled for 1pm on Saturday.

Peter Krawietz is expected to lead Liverpool in their FA Cup clash against Shrewsbury Town

Roberto Firmino and Jurgen Klopp will be out of isolation by Sunday but it remains to be seen if any of the group who tested positive for coronavirus will be at the game

The club have reopened their training facility after it was forced to close for 48 hours

As the shutdown affected only the first-team area of the AXA complex, Liverpool’s youth teams have been able to continue training, with a number of the under-23s expected to feature against the Shrews.

Manager Jurgen Klopp and players Alisson Becker, Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino will have ended their isolation periods by the weekend, although it has yet to be confirmed whether any will be present at Anfield for the match.

Klopp’s other assistant manager Pep Lijnders is still absent, however, after testing positive on Tuesday night, with a number of other players and staff also remaining in isolation.

Lijnders took charge of Liverpool’s draw against Chelsea so if Krawietz is in the dugout on Sunday it will be the third boss in three games for the Reds.

Thursday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at Arsenal was postponed due to significant availability issues and subsequent closure of first-team training, but has been rearranged for January 20.

A statement on the club’s website read: ‘The senior training environment in Kirkby was temporarily closed for a 48-hour period following a significant number of suspected positive COVID-19 test results among the playing squad and staff.

‘The Reds’ Carabao Cup semi-final away leg against Arsenal, scheduled for Thursday, was subsequently postponed and has been rearranged for January 20.

‘After consultation with the relevant Public Health authority, operations have now resumed within the first-team set-up at the training ground.

‘Assistant manager Peter Krawietz is currently taking charge of the team and leading preparations for Liverpool’s next fixture, which sees Shrewsbury Town visit Anfield in the Emirates FA Cup third round on Sunday.’

It remains to be seen which players Liverpool will have available for Sunday’s clash
