Liverpool XI from Raheem Sterling debut and where they are nine years on
On this day in 2012, a 17-year-old Raheem Sterling made his debut for Liverpool in a 2-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic at Anfield.
Sterling replaced Dirk Kuyt late in the game and remains the fourth youngest player to have represented Liverpool in the Premier League.
The winger went on to make two more league appearances from the bench that season against Fulham and Chelsea, before establishing himself as a first-team regular under new boss Brendan Rodgers the following season.
Sterling spent two more years at Anfield before joining Manchester City in a £49m deal and he has gone on to win two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and three League Cups.
Nine years on from Sterling's debut, Daily Star Sport takes a look at the Liverpool starting XI that day and where they are now.
Pepe Reina
Reina spent nine seasons at Liverpool, with his last campaign spent out on loan at Napoli, before leaving in 2014 to join Bayern Munich.
After one year in Germany, Reina has plied his trade predominantly in Italy, with a second spell at Napoli and a stint at AC Milan.
He returned to the Premier League last season, joining Aston Villa on loan as injury cover for Tom Heaton, and he is currently Lazio's first-choice in between the sticks.
Jose Enrique
Enrique was in his first season at Liverpool when Sterling made his debut, having joined the club from Newcastle in a £7m deal.
The full-back was a regular during his first two years at Anfield before persistent knee problems limited him game time.
He left Liverpool in 2016 and spent one season at Real Zaragoza before his recurring knee injury forced him into retirement and he has since become an agent.
Jamie Carragher
A bona fide Liverpool legend, Carragher spent his entire career at Anfield before he retired in 2013.
He has since become a pundit and he is a regular on Sky Sports, where his partnership with former rival Gary Neville has made for must-watch viewing.
Martin Skrtel
Skrtel was a mainstay at Liverpool for nine seasons before he left to join Turkish side Fenerbahce in 2016.
After three seasons at Fenerbahce, he agreed to join Serie A outfit Atalanta but his deal was terminated by mutual consent after just three weeks.
He instead returned to Turkey to sign for Istanbul Basaksehir but, after suffering an Achilles injury last December, he left the club by mutual consent and he has emphatically denied claims he will retire.
Jon Flanagan
Flanagan's best season in a Liverpool shirt came in the 2013-14 campaign where the Reds finished second in the Premier League, with the full-back making 23 league appearances.
Following loan spells at Burnley and Bolton, Flanagan left Liverpool permanently to join Rangers but, after two seasons in Scotland, he signed for Belgian side Charleroi in November 2020.
Jay Spearing
Spearing spent a total of 16 years at Liverpool after joining the club as a seven-year-old and left to join Bolton on a permanent deal in 2013, having made 55 senior appearances for the Reds.
Following four seasons at Bolton, Spearing has spent time at Blackpool and Tranmere Rovers, the club he currently plies his trade for in League Two.
Steven Gerrard
Liverpool's captain that day, Gerrard departed Anfield in 2015 and spent two years in the MLS with LA Galaxy.
He has since moved into management and recently guided Rangers to their first top-flight title in 10 years.
Jordan Henderson
Signed from Sunderland in 2011, Henderson has gone onto become Liverpool captain and he has led the club to a Champions League win and their first ever Premier League title.
Stewart Downing
Downing failed to make much of an impact in his two seasons at Liverpool and signed for West Ham in 2013.
After two seasons at the Hammers, he returned to Middlesbrough and he currently plays for Championship side Blackburn Rovers.
