Liverpool have still only signed Ibrahima Konate this summer as their league rivals continue to spend as they stand still – and the Reds have been urged to sign Spain midfielder Saul Niguez after clubs across the continent were alerted to his availability.
Liverpool endured a fairly shaky campaign last season as they trudged to a third-placed finish – which was a brilliant achievement with all things considered.
Having suffered injuries galore – in particular to defenders Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez – the Reds couldn’t reclaim the Premier League title they had waited thirty years to lift, whilst also crashing out of the UEFA Champions League in the quarter finals.
And with players such as Naby Keita, Roberto Firmino and Thiago failing to impress, the Reds need a spark – something which former defender Jose Enrique believes Saul can bring.
Enrique, 35, played 99 games for Liverpool, scoring two goals in the process.
And having learnt his trade in the Spanish game – as a youth player at Levante and Villarreal – Enrique believes the midfielder would be a brilliant addition at Anfield.
Speaking to Empire of the Kop, Enrique called the acquisition of the Spaniard a ‘no-brainer’.
“If it’s a loan with an option to buy (and not a compulsion to buy) it’s a no-brainer, that’s the reality,” the former left-back said.
“If he does well – I believe he’s a world-class player and he’d do well – you can buy him, and if not you can just have him for the season.”
Despite his rave reviews, Enrique doesn’t think that a midfielder is the top priority for Jurgen Klopp following the introduction of Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott.
“In my opinion, I don’t think signing a new midfielder is a priority for Klopp,” he continued.
““We have Curtis [Jones], Harvey Elliott, [James] Milner, [Naby] Keita, [Jordan] Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago; so you have six or seven players for three positions, so why would you sign a new No.8, even if he’s a better option than some of the players already available?”
Saul has played 339 games for Diego Simeone’s men, scoring 43 goals in the process.
And with his midfield prowess seemingly not wanted in Madrid, he should be able to find a new club rather quickly.
Liverpool have started brilliantly in their Premier League campaign, beating Norwich and Burnley in their first two Premier League games of the season without conceding.
However, they face a much tougher test against Chelsea on Saturday evening, with the winner going top of the league should West Ham slip up.
