Liverpool transfer round-up as Inter Milan lead race for Divock Origi
The January transfer window now means Liverpool can begin addressing their defensive injury woes.
Jurgen Klopp has been urged to bring in new faces at the back having seen his options decimated with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez out for the long haul.
It is a difficult time to recruit however with clubs reluctant to let star players leave midway through the season.
Fringe players though may seek pastures new as they aim to play more minutes.
Divock Origi is one of those for the Reds with opportunities at a premium for the Belgian forward.
Georginio Wijnaldum meanwhile can begin discussions with new clubs as his contract enters its final six months.
Here are the latest transfer rumours coming out of Anfield.
Inter in pole position for Origi
Inter Milan are leading the race to sign Divock Origi from Liverpool, reports Calcio Mercato .
The Belgian has found minutes hard to come by at Anfield with Diogo Jota's arrival adding more competition for places.
Origi has been linked with a move away as several Premier League clubs circle.
But the Serie A outfit look to be leading the race as they plan to bolster an attack that already includes Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku.
Gini transfer warning
Wijnaldum has been told that he may experience a drop off should he decide to leave Liverpool.
The Dutchman is staling on a new contract and can leave for free in six months.
But former Red Ryan Babel has warned his compatriot about the danger of leaving.
He said: “The only reason I left was because I wanted to have more playing minutes to keep my place in the Holland team.
“But you don’t realise how dominating the playing style is at Liverpool until you play in a different team and league.
“I was brought up with really attacking football at Ajax. In the academy, you learn to play that way. When I moved to Liverpool, it was exactly the same. It is in the DNA of the club to play attacking football.”
Carra makes January prediction
It is "inconceivable" that Liverpool won't sign a centre-half in January according to Jamie Carragher.
The Reds have seen their defensive options rocked by injuries as Jurgen Klopp is forced to work without his three recognised central defenders.
“In August, my fear was that a setback for one of the front three might see them fall back into the pack," he told the Telegraph.
"The club addressed that with the signing of Diogo Jota. Now my concern is focused on their defensive issues.
"The injury to Virgil Van Dijk alone will cost Liverpool between nine and 12 points over the course of this season.
“Although Fabinho has proved a fantastic deputy at the back, Joel Matip’s ongoing problems means, to me at least, that it is inconceivable that Liverpool will not sign another centre-half at the earliest opportunity.”
