Liverpool are expected to be active in the January transfer window as Jurgen Klopp seeks to oversee a huge improvement following a turbulent start to the Premier League campaign prior to the World Cup. The Reds endured a relatively quiet summer window besides the statement £85million (including add-ons) capture of Darwin Nunez from Benfica, who has needed some time to settle on English soil despite a respectable goal return.
Arthur Melo has barely featured during an injury-hit campaign while youngsters Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay have shown signs of huge promise.
Klopp has perhaps been made to pay for failing to sign a long-term solution in central midfield following a series of injury problems in the middle of the park.
Now could be the time for Liverpool to strike but with Jude Bellingham not expected to be attainable until the end of the season, the Reds may need to think outside of the box.
Furthermore, a host of Liverpool’s squad players are also facing uncertain futures at Anfield including Nat Phillips and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita, who are out of contract this summer.
Express Sport provides you with the latest Liverpool gossip, ahead of a crucial winter transfer window.
Bellingham twist
It has been reported that Liverpool are in the box-seat to sign Jude Bellingham but recent reports from Spain suggest Real Madrid are now the favourites to land England’s World Cup star.
That’s according to MARCA, who suggest Real Madrid are now in pole position to get over the line.
Bellingham is expected to remain with Borussia Dortmund until the summer when the Bundesliga giants are expected to net a massive fee for the maestro.
It’s unclear whether Liverpool have the kind of money required to land Bellingham but behind the scenes, Klopp is understood to be pushing for the player.
Liverpool are believed to be working on the transfer by building relations with Bellingham’s family, who are expected to handle his future.
Enzo Fernandez ‘pre-agreement’
O Jogo in Portugal claim Liverpool have a pre-agreement with the agent of Enzo Fernandez over a summer transfer.
However, that is not believed to be the case and the race for the World Cup winner is very much open at this stage.
Fernandez only joined Benfica from River Plate in the summer but now the Portuguese giants are expected to net a monstrous fee for the young midfielder.
The 21-year-old has a release clause worth in the region of £105m and that is where Benfica will be pointing potential buyers.
Liverpool are believed to be interested in Fernandez but it seems unlikely they will be able to afford both him and Bellingham – even if both are needed at Anfield.
The Reds have been tracking the World Cup’s Young Player of the Tournament since his River Plate days.
GK deal collapses
Liverpool had looked on course to land goalkeeper Patrick Drewes on a free transfer from Sandhausen ahead of next summer.
Bild in Germany reported in November that Liverpool were looking at landing the 29-year-old to bolster their goalkeeping set-up.
Adrian is expected to depart at the end of the season meaning Liverpool need a third-choice goalkeeper to provide support for Alisson and Caoimhin Kelleher.
Sandhausen sporting director Mikayil Kabaca has now poured cold water over the links, hinting he could stay put.
It means Liverpool will now have to continue monitoring the goalkeeper market, unless they once again decide to extend Adrian’s contract.
