Sam Allardyce feels that it is a ‘shame’ that Jude Bellingham is currently playing for Borussia Dortmund rather than one of the Premier League’s top clubs. Liverpool and Manchester United are among those expected to be battling it out for the midfielder’s signature at the end of the campaign.
Bellingham is one of the most exciting talents in world football and many are anticipating the teenager to be one of the star performers at the Qatar World Cup this winter. The midfielder has shone in the Bundesliga and Champions League for Dortmund, being granted the captain’s armband on several occasions to evidence his maturity beyond his years.
The 19-year-old was dubbed a top prospect when he broke onto the scene at Birmingham City in the 2019/20 campaign, though Dortmund were the only side who truly convinced the playmaker that they will be able to aid his development. Allardyce feels that is a mistake though, feeling that those in the ‘Big Six’ should have emerged with offers.
He told the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast: “I think Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool missed a massive opportunity in snapping him [Bellingham] up. Birmingham, at this stage, are always going to be struggling for money and looking to capitalise on such a great player that they had. For him to have ended up in Germany I think is a shame.”

United attempted to sign Bellingham prior to his Bundesliga move and even welcomed the player to their training ground for talks, though they were unable to persuade Bellingham and his camp to remain in England. Chelsea and Manchester City have also been cited as interested in signing the Dortmund star, with Real Madrid also willing to spend big to secure his signature.
City have developed several young players under Pep Guardiola over the past few years, notably Phil Foden, though the Spanish boss has defended Bellingham’s move to Dortmund. Speaking last week, the former Barcelona boss said: “Borussia Dortmund is the perfect place for young talent to come.

“Maybe if Jude Bellingham was in England he would go to City, United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal or Tottenham, maybe he would not get the minutes. The best thing for a young player to be better is to play minutes.
“He was 17 when he arrived but it was not just about his quality, how he was leading, his kicking, going to the referee. This guy was something special in terms of his mentality. Now he is 19 and he is already one of the captains. The quality, everybody knows it. The whole package is really good.”
