Liverpool to benefit greatly if Ings becomes Aguero’s successor at Man City
Liverpool are set to cash in if Manchester City press ahead with a shock swoop for Southampton striker Danny Ings.
Pep Guardiola's side are looking to replace Sergio Aguero, who is not expected to sign a new contract and has been linked with a free transfer to Chelsea or Barcelona.
Aguero is City's all-time record goalscorer with with 257 goals in 384 games – including the famous last-gasp strike which won the Premier League title in the dying moments of the 2011/12 season.
City boss Guardiola needs a proven goalscorer – and Ings fits the bill, having scored 30 goals in 60 Premier League games since leaving Liverpool in 2019.
And Jurgen Klopp's side will benefit if their rivals land the 28-year-old – because of a clause in the deal which took him to St Mary's.
The Reds inserted a 20% sell-on clause into the agreement to sell Ings to Southampton, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The striker will enter the final year of his contract with Ralph Hasenhuttl's side this summer, so the Saints won't be able to demand a huge transfer fee.
But the south coast are still likely to fetch a price of around £20million if they decide to sell rather than lose him for free the following year.
For City, that's a much cheaper alternative than engaging in a £100m-plus bidding war over Erling Haaland with Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid.
And for Liverpool, that's a £4m cash boost that could go into Klopp's coffers.
Ings fired 22 Premier League goals last season as he and Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shared second place in the race for the Golden Boot – just one goal behind Leicester's Jamie Vardy.
The Southampton man is approaching the peak years of his career, and City could be landing a bargain if he can avoid the injury problems that plagued his time at Liverpool.
