Liverpool thankful for rule change in Champions League after Madrid humiliation
Liverpool fans are thankful there's no longer an away goals rule in the Champions League after they shipped five at Anfield on Tuesday evening.
The Reds were in dreamland after Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah fired them into a 2-0 lead against Los Blancos after 14 minutes. However, Real Madrid rallied and netted five without reply to take a three-goal lead back to the Bernabeu.
While a three-goal deficit will be a tough task to overcome at the Bernabeu, it would have been mission impossible if the away goals rule still came into play. If that rule was still in place, the Reds would have to net at least four to progress.

One fan tweeted: "Thank f*** there’s no away goals but I can’t believe we’ve chucked away a two-goal lead in 20 minutes!"
"Disappointing results, good thing away goals are scrapped. Hope we will get back in the game," a second added. While a third tweeted: "Liverpool is lucky away goals don't count anymore or they would definitely be finished!"

And a fourth tweeted, with a number of laughing emojis: "Imagine if the away goal rule was still in effect!"
The rule was abolished in 2021, with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin finally accepting the change.
"The away goals rule has been an intrinsic part of UEFA competitions since it was introduced in 1965," admitted Ceferin at the time. "However, the question of its abolition has been debated at various UEFA meetings over the last few years.
"Although there was no unanimity of views, many coaches, fans and other football stakeholders have questioned its fairness and have expressed a preference for the rule to be abolished."
