Liverpool star Mohamed Salah and Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez are reportedly set to put their club differences aside as they work together as pundits for BeIN Sports during the World Cup. Eygpt and Algeria failed to qualify for the tournament but the two players look set to keep themselves busy over the month-long Premier League hiatus for the competition.

The duo are both captains of their national teams – but their efforts were not enough to help their teams qualify for the showpiece event in November after they failed to come through African qualification. Egypt were defeated by Senegal in the playoff phase while Algeria lost at the same stage to Cameroon.

The pair look set to make the most of their time off from domestic action, however, by working as pundits for BeIN Sports during the tournament, according to Qatari site Stad Doha. The broadcaster will show the World Cup in 21 countries including Algeria and Egypt with Mahrez and Salah likely to be at the forefront as a result.

Both players are likely to be given time off by their clubs as their team mates compete in Qatar, especially after a packed schedule that has seen the Reds play twice every week since the international break last month and will continue to do so until the World Cup. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been particularly scathing on the schedule which will also see the Premier League have the shortest break following the tournament, restarting the week after on Boxing Day.

The Sky Blues would have faced the same task – but this week’s scheduled fixture against Arsenal was postponed in order for the rearranged Europa League match between the Gunners and PSV to take place instead.

Another player that will not be going to the World Cup is Liverpool forward Diogo Jota after the Portugal star was ruled out of the competition with a calf injury. The 25-year-old went down off the ball in the final moments of his side’s 1-0 victory over Manchester City this weekend with Klopp confirming the issue will force him to miss the tournament.

“Not good news with Diogo, yes he will miss the World Cup,” he told reporters during his pre-match press conference for today’s fixture with West Ham. “Pretty serious injury in the muscle, calf muscle. Now the recovery starts, or the process starts, let me say it like this.

“That’s it pretty much, that’s the first diagnosis, which was pretty clear. All the rest will follow in the next few days. Very sad news for the boy, for us, for Portugal, for everybody.”
