Liverpool star Mo Salah misses golden opportunity to end Saudi transfer rumours

All eyes were on Mohamed Salah for Liverpool’s match against Aston Villa on Sunday and whether he would be waving goodbye to an incredible career on Merseyside. But Liverpool fans arguably left with more questions than answers despite Salah having a great opportunity to put the transfer rumours to bed once and for all.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool as a whole have made it clear that they’re not prepared to let Salah leave, particularly now the Premier League transfer window is closed. But that stance hasn’t put Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad off of making an aggressive approach to sign the Egyptian.

Liverpool are braced for another offer from the Gulf state club after rejecting an initial offer worth a staggering £150million. While Klopp has been the spokesperson for the club in regards to Liverpool’s stance against selling Salah, the forward has been less forthcoming in speaking out.

He’s been quiet on social media, other than a post of himself enjoying a day off in London and smiling in training. Sunday’s match against Villa was the first opportunity for Salah to give some reassurance to Liverpool’s fanbase that he didn’t have his head turned by the prospect of a mega-money move to Saudi.

Back on the scoresheet once again, Salah appeared subdued and muted in his celebrations. While the Kop roared and sang Salah’s name, the striker barely even acknowledged them other than a brief fist pump.

Footballers often use goal celebrations to starve off any suggestions they’re set to leave, as did Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe when he yelled ‘I am staying here’ when he scored against Toulouse last month. Salah clearly didn’t feel it necessary and there was no sense after the match that he was waving goodbye to the club he’s won every trophy with.

Dominik Szoboszlai gave the first real insight behind the scenes after the match into Salah’s thoughts on a move to Saudi Arabia, insisting the Egypt international doesn’t want to leave. He said: “You know it is football everyone is talking. We are really happy that he has stayed. We are of course speaking between each other but he wants to stay, he wants to be here and be with us.”

But Liverpool fans will want to hear that from the horse’s mouth, and until then there will be genuine fear he could force a move to the Gulf state. Klopp has stated in the past that he doesn’t want any players who have no desire to stay at Anfield.

It doesn’t appear as though Salah is pushing to leave otherwise the Liverpool boss wouldn’t be as confident as he has been in interviews when asked about the forward’s future. But the question will linger for most Liverpool fans now until the Saudi Pro League transfer window closes on September 7 if Salah doesn’t speak out himself.
