Liverpool icon Luis Suarez has insisted to Darwin Nunez that his red card on his home debut is ‘nothing serious’ and has told him to block out the reaction because people in England ‘make a big deal out of everything’. Suarez has spoken to his fellow Uruguayan about learning from mistakes and avoiding becoming a target after his explosive start.
Nunez endured a horror Anfield welcome on Monday night, missing a few good chances throughout the game before seeing red after 57 minutes for headbutting Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen. Liverpool fought back to salvage a 1-1 draw, with Luis Diaz firing in a stunning leveller just four minutes later, cancelling out Wilfried Zaha’s cool opener.
But despite the Reds dropping four points in their opening two Premier League games this season, all the focus was on Nunez at full-time. He arrives carrying significant pressure due to his £85million transfer fee and has the daunting task of replacing Sadio Mane after his exit to Bayern Munich.
And Suarez, who scored 82 goals in 133 games for Liverpool, has revealed he’s been in touch with the 23-year-old over not allowing English rival fans and media coverage to get on top of him in the early stages of his transition from Benfica. He told Telemundo: “It’s nothing serious. We’ve all made a mistake.

“The problem is that he’s only just arrived over there, and in England, to put it lightly, they make a big deal out of everything. With what happened to him the other day, I was talking to him [to say] don’t give them any more chances; it’ll only get worse.
“Because he is just starting out, and to make him aware that from now on [opponents] will be seeking him out twice or three times more often. Even more so in England – he’s hearing this from an idiot who makes mistakes and suffered for them, but falling down and getting up again made me stronger.
“Darwin is someone who listens a lot. He is very smart that way, and I think he will try to turn this situation around. It’s not a big deal. We have all made mistakes; we have all been sent off.”
Nunez will now serve a three-match suspension, starting with Monday’s trip to Old Trafford, in which he would’ve been desperate to feature in and mark his arrival with a headline performance against Manchester United. The towering striker will also miss AFC Bournemouth and Newcastle United’s visits to Anfield this month.
