Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson promised Darwin Nunez he would give him a good cross to score in the second half of the Reds’ Champions League match against Ajax after the Uruguayan missed a sitter at the end of the first period. He duly delivered as the 23-year-old netted with a header following a corner from the Scotland captain on the 50-minute mark.

Liverpool had been largely under the cosh for most of the first half with the host passing up two good opportunities to open the scoring but took the lead against the run of play when Mohamed Salah lobbed Ajax ‘keeper Remko Pasveer in the 42nd minute.

The Reds’ should have doubled their lead moments later when Roberto Firmino squared the ball across for Nunez, who had the goal at his mercy from six yards out. Yet inexplicably, the forward managed to hit the post from the shot leaving his team with more work to do in the second half.

After the match, Robertson admitted that his teammate had been angry with himself for the miss during the interval and the Scotsman promised he would help him out as he looked to make amends.

“Darwin was really angry with himself at halftime,” he told BT Sport. “I sat next to him and told him I would put a cross into his head for him to score.”

The left-back stayed true to his word, putting in a fantastic cross from a corner shortly after the teams reemerged which allowed Nunez to power a header home and atone for his earlier error.

Minutes later Harvey Elliott fired in Liverpool’s third in order to seal the win for Jurgen Klopp’s men who have now guaranteed their progression to the knockout stages with a game to spare. Nunez was hooked around the hour mark with the game beyond doubt in order to protect him for the weekend’s match against Leeds.

The English teenager was also full of praise for Nunez in his post-match interview, impressed by the way he learned from his mistakes to make a difference by the full-time whistle.

“Its what strikers need to do to be honest,” he told BT Sport. “Get mistakes or whatever out the way and not dwell on it too much. And that’s exactly what he did and at the end of the day, he got his goal, which is what he deserved.

“He ran all around the pitch tonight and got his goal which is the main thing.”
