Liverpool star Andy Robertson has explained what the overall view from the Reds squad on Fenway Sports Group’s hopes to sell the club are. FSG dropped a bombshell a little more than a month ago when it was announced that they were open to offers for the Reds.
A number of bidders ranging from American billionaires and sovereign wealth funds have been linked. It’s led to a number of changes behind the scenes already with Ian Graham and Julian Ward leaving at the end of the season while FSG president Mike Gordon has stepped down from his role to oversee the potential sale.
How the current position of the club affects them in the transfer market remains to be seen with speculation of any bids forthcoming running cold. FSG have indicated that they’re willing to wait for the right offer and don’t want to simply take the highest bid as they want to leave the club in a favourable position.
There is a chance that FSG end up bringing in huge investment instead of a full-scale sale. But all the confusion surrounding Liverpool’s ownership isn’t having any effect on the playing staff, according to Robertson.
“We can’t control anything [over ownership],” Robertson told the Liverpool Echo. “That is the way we think as a squad, that’s our view on it and we can’t control anything.
“I think the owners we have got have been very successful at this club and if they want to move on or whatever then fair play to them. They have [been] nothing but good to me and nothing but good to this club in my opinion and yes, what happens will happen and we will try and sit back and control what happens on the pitch.
“And if things need to be controlled off the pitch then we will let the people who are a lot more intelligent than me and higher up than me to sort, that’s for sure!” Jurgen Klopp was asked about FSG’s potential sale last month after the news broke about their proposition.
And the Liverpool boss quickly brushed off any concerns, adding that it won’t affect his own future at Anfield. “[FSG’s search will have] no impact at all,” Klopp said.
“Pep (Lijnders) said pretty much everything in the press conference [on Tuesday]. We knew about it a bit longer, their thoughts, and I don’t 100% understand why we all [say] it gets sold. What I read was they are looking for investors and that makes sense. A good idea, I like that. It didn’t distract the preparation at all. The players didn’t ask me but if they want to ask me I can tell them everything.
“For me it means nothing. Whatever happens, I really like how we work together with our owners but if that would change I’m committed to the club obviously. As far as I know they are looking for investors and I thought that makes sense.”
