Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk fires stern transfer message to owners FSG
Virgil van Dijk is hoping his side make “quality signings” this summer with Liverpool undergoing a major rebuilding job. FSG are looking to spend big and were willing give Brighton a six-figure check to take Moises Caicedo.
However, the highly-rated midfielder refused to move to Anfield and waited for Chelsea to come in with a bigger bid, which was accepted on Friday. The Blues are hoping they can announce Caicedo as their player prior to the Premier League showdown against Liverpool to completely rub salt in their wounds.
Liverpool also look set to miss out on Southampton teenager Romeo Lavia, with Chelsea again beating them to the deal. However, Van Dijk is confident that the Reds will spend their money wisely on the right players.
“The thing is, whether we need to sign a player for a particular position, yes or no, any top club at the moment would love to improve their squad,” said van Dijk. “So why wouldn’t we as players either? We all want quality signings and that’s what we’ve done so far. So we trust the club. I definitely trust the club. They did quite good business over the last years, so why not now as well?
“If you follow social media, you get dizzy with all the names. In my opinion, it’s speculation and they try to guess names to put fuel on the fire and stuff and that’s how the internet works. You’ll see us linked with almost every midfielder in the world, so just wait and see. We have professionals working on it and that’s the most important thing.
“Like I said before, we trust the club, we play for the club, and we trust the club to do the right thing. We’ll see what happens in the next couple of weeks.”
Van Dijk has been trusted with the captain’s armband this season following Jordan Henderson’s move to Saudi Arabia. The former team-mates have been in contact since the transfer went through.
“I’ve spoken to Jordan about lots of stuff and I’ll definitely speak to him about the other stuff as well that comes with being captain of Liverpool FC,” said the Dutchman. “I’m not too big to ask questions whenever help is needed, but I also know I’ll do it my way. That’s the most important thing.

“I am who I am and I feel I can definitely contribute to success as captain of the club. It was definitely a thrill, that doesn’t change. I couldn’t dream of this when I was young to be the captain of Holland and the captain of Liverpool.
“Being where I am today, that’s the beauty of life. Things are happening and it’s special. I won’t take it for granted. The hard work starts now and I’m looking forward to it.”
