Liverpool are serious in their attempts to sign Sofyan Amrabat, according to reports. It has been claimed an offer of £35million would not be turned down by Fiorentina for the midfielder.

Amrabat’s stock rose dramatically during his performances for Morocco at the World Cup. He played every minute of all seven matches in the run to the third-place play-off.

Liverpool are in the market for midfield reinforcements after a difficult first period of the season. Nearly all of Jurgen Klopp’s midfielders have spent periods on the sideline with injuries this term.

There is also a sense that younger legs need to be brought into the middle of the park. Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and James Milner are all on the wrong side of 30, while Fabinho turned 29 in October.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have also been persistently troubled with fitness issues. Amrabat, 26, is arguably hitting the prime of his career.

Tottenham previously held an interest in the player. But Liverpool are now strongly linked with his services following the tournament in Qatar.

The print version of Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport claims Fiorentina cannot afford to turn down an offer of £35m (€40m) if it arrives in January. The report says Liverpool have the financial ability to pull the deal off if they so wish.

Online, Gazzetta report that Liverpool are seriously thinking of adding Amrabat to their midfield options. Tottenham are also still said to be keen on the player.

Amrabat started his professional career in the Netherlands with Utrecht. He had spells at Feyenoord, Club Brugge and Hellas Verona but it is at Fiorentina where he has found a home.

He has 18 months remaining on his current contract but there is an option for Fiorentina to extend that by a further year. If Liverpool were to sign Amrabat, it wouldn’t be for his goalscoring prowess.

He has only scored once in 78 games for Fiorentina and six times in his entire professional career. He is yet to net in his 46 caps for Morocco but his tough tackling and defensive awareness made him a crucial part of the African side’s historic path to fourth place at the World Cup.

Liverpool have to focus on on-field matters before the transfer window opens. They face Manchester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Thursday before they travel to Aston Villa in the Premier League on Boxing Day.
