Liverpool sent transfer message by Rennes wonderkid who snubbed Jurgen Klopp
Rennes wonderkid Jeremy Doku has sent Liverpool a transfer message after revealing why he snubbed an approach from the Reds.
The 18-year-old is one of European football's rising stars, having joined the Ligue 1 side from Anderlecht in a £23million deal last summer.
He has spoken about how he turned down an approached from Liverpool when he was 15 – while Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea were also keen on the teenager
And he revealed why turned down the Reds even after speaking to Sadio Mane and Gini Wijnaldum.
“A lot of teams came to see me," Doku told Ouest-France, cited by Metro. "Everyone talks about Liverpool because it was the most concrete interest but there was also Arsenal and Chelsea.
“I was able to discuss with Jurgen, [Sadio] Mane, [Gini] Wijnaldum… [Steven] Gerrard too. I talked a lot with Mane but we didn’t really talk about football. We talked about everything.
“He told me that I was young, that I still had time. He wasn’t trying to convince me or say to me ‘come here, you will succeed’.
“I preferred to be careful. I know what my trajectory had to be. I knew what route I needed to take and I knew at that moment I needed to stay at Anderlecht."
Doku insists he has no regrets over turning down Liverpool – but said he is confident enough in his ability that he will be able to earn a move to Anfield in the future.
He said: “As soon as I’m asked if I regret it, I always say no, because if Liverpool came to me at 15, if they like me, they’ll come back later, that’s certain. It’s up to me to play well.”
Doku played 37 times for Anderlecht, scoring six goals and grabbing seven assists before earning his move to Anderlecht.
He has scored once and laid on another two in 24 appearances for Rennes this season.
