Liverpool have emerged as shock frontrunners to sign Moises Caicedo after 'outbidding' Chelsea for the Brighton midfielder.
The news comes after Chelsea seemingly leapfrogged Liverpool in the race to land Southampton's Romeo Lavia by submitting a £48million offer for the Belgian youngster on Wednesday night.
According to The Telegraph, Chelsea's bid for Lavia may have been in response to Liverpool's sudden attempt to hijack their move for Caicedo. It's understood, however, that Caicedo's preferred destination is Stamford Bridge and a £100m transfer is still expected to be tied up by the end of the week.
Other reports claim that Liverpool have not table an official bid for Caicedo, but that they've opened talks with Brighton after getting frustrated with the slow speed of their negotiations with Southampton for Lavia.

Jurgen Klopp's side are desperate for midfield reinforcements after losing both Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in the past month and their interest in Caicedo is long-standing, despite spending the last few weeks focusing on a deal for Lavia.
Chelsea meanwhile are hoping to tie up moves for Caicedo and Leeds midfielder Tyler Adams before the start of the Premier League season this week, where coincidentally they'll be welcoming Liverpool to Stamford Bridge.

Despite news of what would be a record-breaking bid, Liverpool fans on social media seemed to have doubts about the legitimacy of their out-of-the-blue Caicedo pursuit.
"Hang on, we're unwilling to pay £50m for Lavia but we're happy to splash £100m on Caicedo? Make it make sense," one Reds fan tweeted. Another wrote: "We couldn't afford Bellingham for £100m, so now we're paying the same price for Caicedo ON TOP OF signing Mac Allister and Szoboszlai? Something doesn't add up."
Others however lapped up the reports, with one jubilant supporter insisting "Liverpool are back!"
"Liverpool hijacking Chelsea's bid for Caicedo after they stopped us getting Colwill. You love to see it," tweeted another happy fan.
