Liverpool are refusing to give up on the prospect of signing Barcelona wonderkid Pedri this summer, despite the Catalans offering him a new deal. Liverpool have apparently approached Pedri’s representatives over a potential move.

Liverpool have launched a surprising move for Pedri, according to reports.

The young midfielder has shone at Barcelona since breaking into the first team.

He’s played 30 times for Barca in La Liga this season, scoring twice and providing three assists.

The 18-year-old predominantly plays as a central attacking midfielder, and has featured on the wing a few times this season.

Pedri is under contract until 2022, but Barca have the option to extend that deal for a further two years.

However, his release clause of £70million has set off alarm bells in Catalonia.

As a result, Barcelona chiefs have opened negotiations over a new contract for the youngster.

Despite the offer of a new contract, Liverpool aren’t concerned – according to The Mirror.

Liverpool are still believed to be eager to sign him, however.

Pedri’s new contract will apparently contain a release clause worth an eye-watering £350million, and it is unlikely the Reds will come close to that.

Liverpool are set to lose Georginio Wijnaldum on a free transfer this summer, with the Dutchman looking likely to leave on a free.

The 30-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and it seems he is currently unlikely to sign a new deal.

Pedri earned his first call-up to the Spanish national side in the March international break, with the youngster heaping praise on Ronald Koeman.

The teenager said: “He trusted me from the very first day.

“I’m very grateful to him, because if it wasn’t for Koeman I wouldn’t be in this squad.

“He’s a coach who likes to give young players a chance … I want to return the faith he had in me.”
