Liverpool provide instant reaction to Carragher’s criticism with Chelsea win

Liverpool provided an instant reaction to Jamie Carragher's trophy criticism by dramatically beating Chelsea on penalties in the Carabao Cup final.

The Reds gruelled it out against Thomas Tuchel's men for 120 minutes plus-stoppage time but were unable to find a way past Edouard Mendy in goal.

With the game taken to a penalty shootout, goalkeeper substitute Kepa Arrizabalaga missed the crucial 11th penalty for the Blues to give Jurgen Klopp's side their first trophy since 2020.

And in doing so, Klopp instantly provided a response to club legend Carragher after the Sky Sports pundit claimed they hadn't "won enough" silverware despite being a top side.

Carragher had said prior to the match: "What this Liverpool team have done and what’s Klopp’s done, we all think they’re amazing, fantastic – they haven’t actually won enough for how good they are."

He went on to say Manchester City's brilliance in recent years has had a major impact on Liverpool's lack of silverware.

Carragher added: "They’re up against an unbelievable team in Pep Guardiola in terms of every competition – but it’s very difficult to win the Premier League, very difficult to win the Champions League so to pick up domestic cups, and that’s what Chelsea do as a club which is unbelievable.

“[Chelsea are] fantastic in cup competitions and that’s what this Liverpool team need to do, they need to win more domestic cup competitions."

The iconic centre-back, however, appeared to jinx the west London side as Tuchel's decision to swap Kepa for Mendy just before penalties massively backfired.

Tuchel missed out on an opportunity to win his fourth trophy with Chelsea in just over a year.

Meanwhile, compatriot Klopp added a League Cup to the Champions League, Premier League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup already in his Liverpool trophy cabinet.
