Liverpool physio issues public defence after injury record draws criticism
Liverpool's first-team physio Chris Morgan has defended the club's medical department from criticism on social media relating to the Reds' recent injury problems.
Defenders Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip have all suffered season ending injuries this year and club captain Jordan Henderson became the latest player to be sidelined after he was forced off in the 2-0 loss to Everton on Saturday.
The likes of Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Fabinho, James Milner and Diogo Jota have also suffered injuries at various points during the season.
Liverpool's form has been majorly affected by their injury problems, with Jurgen Klopp's side currently sat sixth in the league table and five points off the top four.
Morgan rejoined Liverpool's medical department at the start of the season after spells at Crystal Palace and Arsenal and some fans have pointed out that his return has coincided with the increase in injuries.
However, Morgan has taken to Twitter to tell supporters not to "confuse correlation with causation" and that Liverpool's injury problems are "complex and multi-factorial".
On Tuesday morning, Morgan tweeted: "Don't be nasty. Don’t tweet nonsense. Don’t confuse correlation with causation."
He later added: "One person is not a medical/performance dept. 2 doctors, 4/5 physios, 3 soft tissue therapists, 1 rehab coach, 1 head of recovery, 1 sports scientist, 1 head of fitness, 3 fitness and conditioners, 1 head of nutrition, 1 Psych(iatrist), 1 radiologist. 2 (of them) just happen to run on the pitch."
When asked by one supporter why he thought Liverpool had suffered so many injuries, Morgan replied: "It’s complex and multi-factorial.
"The ones we can’t prevent (and we’ve had lots) then impact the ability to try to prevent others. We still have to put 11 players on the pitch every 3-4 days after all."
