Liverpool owners given savage dig by Jamie Carragher after Gary Neville spat

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has torn into his former club’s owners over their summer transfer activity. The pundit launched into FSG after yet another bid was turned down by Southampton for Romeo Lavia.

Southampton have made it clear they want £50million for Lavia in this window. However, Liverpool are yet to match that asking price.

Their latest offer on Monday reached £45m, including add-ons. It was the third bid Liverpool had made and, unsurprisingly, it was rejected by Saints.

Carragher has questioned why the club are still pursuing a player if they don’t think he is worth Southampton’s valuation. He has labelled the saga as “embarrassing” and doesn’t understand the stance his old club are taking.

Carragher tweeted: “This is embarrassing. Liverpool for years now have got deals done quickly with no fuss.

“If you don’t think he’s worth £50M move on, if you really want him pay it. Also not sure why LFC aren’t in for [Moises] Caicedo, yes it’s a lot of money but Liverpool got big money for JH/FAB.”

A fan replied to Carragher, questioning whether “embarrassing” was the right word to use. But he stuck to his guns, responding: “Three bids turned down considering how we normally go about our business I’d say it was!”

Carragher’s Sky Sports colleague Gary Neville then got involved. He replied to the initial tweet: “Do you now agree that Klopp has shielded your owners for the last 5-6 years?”

Carragher took that as a chance to give more information about the goings on behind the scenes at Liverpool. But he also had a dig at Neville over his role as co-owner of Salford City.

The 23/24 home shirt for Liverpool pays homage to the past of the club, as well as collaborator Nike, with a strong 1970s influence. The iconic red, capped with bold white cuffs and collar really does invoke that classic Liverpool FC style while adding a cool retro touch

Carragher replied: “Gary you haven’t a clue what’s going on at Liverpool! The owners have a self sustaining model that Klopp bought into and produced miracles!

“Part of that was a transfer department that was the envy of Europe. That has now gone with Klopp running the club from top to bottom.

“LFC have had three DOF’s [directors of football] in 18 months, the current one who came out of retirement to do the job for this summer, he’s a close contact of the manager. Liverpool’s wage bill is £150M more than Arsenals a season. Just do the Maths.

“Liverpool don’t have an investor (Peter Lim) like you do at Salford, where you and lads just get on a plane at the end of the season to beg him to spend more money!!”
