Liverpool owners FSG backed to have ‘serious chat’ over Jurgen Klopp’s future

Tottenham v Liverpool: Football Digest’s preview

Liverpool owners FSG will have a ‘serious chat’ about sacking Jurgen Klopp if the Premier League champions fail to finish in the top four this season. The Reds face a crucial clash against Tottenham on Thursday night as they look to get their title defence back on track.

Klopp’s side have plummeted from top spot after going five league games without a win – having failed to score in their last four.

Defeat at Tottenham tonight would see Jose Mourinho’s men overtake them – leaving Liverpool in sixth spot, seven points adrift of leaders Manchester City.

The recent goal drought has compounded problems at the back for the Reds, who have lost first-choice centre-backs Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez to long-term injuries this season.

Ex-Anfield defender Glen Johnson reckons it’s already too late for Liverpool’s title chances – and has warned Klopp could face the chop if his side miss out on the Champions League spots.

“I don’t think Liverpool will have enough to win the league this year, but I expect them to get the top four,” Johnson told CheltenhamGuides.com.

“But it will be tough. There are six clubs fighting for the top four again.

“It will be super harsh for Klopp to be under any pressure given the success that he’s had, but we know that owners once they get success they want to keep repeating it.

“So I think there would be a discussion to have if he did finish outside the top four.

Johnson qualified his comments by saying he didn’t think Klopp was in danger after delivering the Champions League, Premier League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup in the past two seasons.

But insisted that the club’s American owners would at least weigh up their options if Liverpool finish outside the top four.

“I think it would be extremely, extremely harsh in terms of where he’s brought the club in the last few years.”

“I don’t think he would be sacked. I think they would have a serious chat about it.”

Johnson’s comments come after Jan Aage Fjortoft said tonight’s Tottenham game was ‘make or break’ for Liverpool and Klopp.

The former Premier League striker said: “I think this is like a make or break position now for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.

“Because if they start losing, if they get more and more points behind Manchester City, it’s quite interesting how things will develop, even at Liverpool, even at a strong structure that Liverpool have got at the moment.

“So I think [Thursday] is a key game and I think Liverpool can take this because this is a make or break game for them.”
