Liverpool only paid £4m for Diogo Jota – but Wolves owed pay day this summer

Liverpool are set to pay a notable instalment to Wolves for the transfer of Diogo Jota ahead of the new Premier League season having paid only £4million up front.

The two clubs agreed to a lengthy payment structure due to recent financial constraints placed on even the highest levels of football, with an additional £1million being paid last December.

The 24-year-old has recently returned to Jurgen Klopp’s first-team plans following a spell on the sidelines with a knee problem, but is yet to rediscover his fine form from late 2020.

Jota scored four goals across five Premier League outings between October and November as well as four Champions League goals across two fixtures during the same period.

Although Liverpool will be delighted to have him back on the pitch, Wolves are set to benefit the most come the end of the season with a hefty £12million instalment.

As reported by the Telegraph, the additional sum will provide the club with a welcome financial boost following over a year without any supporters at Molineux.

The report adds that further instalments will come over the years, softening the blow of the departure of Jota following a fine spell under Nuno Espirito Santo.

The forward managed 44 goals in 131 appearances for the club, and he could come up against his former colleagues on Monday evening.

Nuno said of his former star: “I am absolutely sure that if Molineux was full of our fans he would have a huge reception because what Diogo did with us was amazing, fantastic, beyond words.

“He is truly admired by the fans because he gave everything he had for Wolves.
