Liverpool 'may trigger £42m release clause for Barcelona's Gavi'

Liverpool ‘willing to trigger £42m release clause for Barcelona starlet Gavi, with the 17-year-old considering his options outside of the Nou Camp’

  • Barcelona wonderkid Gavi has just 18 months left on his current contract
  • Liverpool are considering their options over a potential summer move
  • The Reds are ready to take advantage of Barca’s poor financial situation
  • But Barca have made keeping the 17-year-old one of their primary objectives

Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a sensational swoop for Barcelona starlet Gavi by taking advantage of the Spanish side’s financial woes.

The 17-year-old midfielder’s current deal expires in the summer of 2023 and the Nou Camp outfit are desperate to tie him down to an extended deal.

Xavi is keen to build a new Barca side around the midfielder, but may now face a struggle to keep him away from Europe’s bigger clubs.

According to El Nacional, Liverpool are ready to offer Gavi a deal worth £3m per year – double what Barcelona can afford – while also dangling the incentive of an £8m signing on fee.

Cash strapped Barca cannot compete financially with the Reds and may face further frustration in being unable to extend the deal.

The report adds that Gavi has a release clause of around £42m, one that Barca would be desperate to increase substantially should they agree a new contract with the youngster.

With just 18 months left on his current deal, that move could come this summer, as by the time of the next January transfer window, Jurgen Klopp’s side will be able to negotiate a free transfer with Gavi.

The report also adds that Barca do hold hope they can still convince Gavi to stay. But even with the player holding the club close to him, they could still face a losing battle to prevent Liverpool’s attractive offer tempting in him into a move away.

For now Barca’s priority is to tie him down to a new deal now the January transfer market is closed.

Gavi has made 26 appearances this season and scored at the weekend in the 4-2 victory over Atletico Madrid where he blew kisses to the home fans at the Nou Camp.
