Liverpool may miss out on Mount as Chelsea ‘restart contract talks’

Mason Mount has reportedly restarted contract talks with Chelsea – putting Liverpool’s summer transfer swoop in jeopardy. Talks had initially stalled over Mount’s wage expectations with the England international said to be asking for £250,000 a week if he was to commit his future to the Blues long-term.
Mount is also said to have concerns over the length of the contract, image rights and other clauses that he views as unfavourable to him when he considers previous contracts dished out, as per the Evening Standard. But the report states that Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, who has led the talks with Mount, has offered the 24-year-old a fresh one or two-year extension after his initial proposition of a seven-year contract was turned down.
This would help buy Chelsea time to negotiate a longer-term deal and reject the advances of Liverpool, who are hoping to snap the player up in the summer before his contract runs out next year.
Liverpool are in desperate need of reinforcements in the centre of the park with their options currently ranging from ageing stars such as Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner and the injury-prone Thiago, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Arthur Melo.
There have been promising signs from their youngsters Harvey Elliot, Curtis Jones and Stefan Bajcetic but all three lack the experience to be playing week in, week out. Therefore, Mount is being prioritised as a top target with a good balance of youth and experience.
Chelsea value Mount at £70m but it is likely that price tag will be negotiated down with Manchester United, Newcastle, Manchester City and Arsenal all believed to be keeping a watchful eye on how talks progress.

However, according to The Athletic, discussions between Mount and Chelsea have been ‘positive’ and there is now a belief that he could re-sign with his boyhood club. It was previously thought that Mount would be leaving Stamford Bridge in the summer with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claiming that there was still a ‘big gap in negotiations’ last month.
He tweeted: “There’s still a big gap in the negotiations between Chelsea and Mason Mount, as a new deal is, again, far from being agreed. No final decision yet but chances of Mason Mount leaving Chelsea are increasing — Mount will be on the market if a new deal is not agreed before the summer.”
