Liverpool make Mason Mount decision after holding ‘productive’ talks
Klopp admits past successes have helped him keep Liverpool job
Liverpool are prepared to meet the salary demands of Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount after holding discussions with his representatives over a potential summer move for his services, according to reports. Mount’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge appears to be somewhat uncertain as things stand, with contract negotiations seemingly at an impasse despite months of internal talks.
Liverpool have been credited with an interest in bringing Mount to Anfield over the last few weeks, with Jurgen Klopp eager to improve his midfield ranks after being caught short in the engine room on too many occasions this season. The Merseyside giants are now preparing to step up their pursuit of the Chelsea and England ace following ‘productive’ talks with his agents, according to Goal.
It is said that Liverpool are willing and able to give Mount the salary that he would be asking for, which suggests that personal terms could be relatively easy to negotiate if they decide to firm up their interest in his services before the start of next season. The Reds are said to believe that Mount’s age, experience and skillset would make him an ideal fit to lead what is expected to be a wide-ranging summer rebuild under the watchful eye of Jurgen Klopp.
Mount’s ability to stay fit would also serve as a huge boost for Liverpool in midfield, with the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain having struggled with consistent injury problems over the last few years. The Blues maestro has played at least 39 games in each of his six seasons as a professional and reached 32 for this term before picking up the groin issue that has kept him out of Chelsea’s last four matches.

Liverpool are unlikely to be the only club in the race to land Mount in the summer, though, with Bayern Munich having also been linked with his signature following the appointment of former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel as their new manager. The west Londoners are thought to be resigned to losing Mount at the end of the season in any case, which suggests that a bidding war could soon develop if Liverpool are joined by other suitors in the battle to snap him up.
Chelsea have also slapped a £50million price tag on Mount, according to The Guardian, as they look to recoup a transfer fee for the 24-year-old before his existing contract runs out in the summer of 2024. It remains to be seen how the situation will eventually play out, with Mount unlikely to be short of options if he does end up leaving Chelsea at some point between now and next season.

Former England midfielder Danny Murphy recently insisted that Mount will have his pick of several top clubs if it becomes clear that he will not be staying at Stamford Bridge, telling talkSPORT: “With Mason Mount there are takers, that’s for sure. You are talking about a terrific player.
“I am a big fan of Mason Mount. The criticism this season has been fine because he has had a poor time, as has the team. But he has been at a huge club for four seasons and three of them he has been excellent.
“The fact is he is going to have a choice, because nearly all the big clubs are in for him. They are in for him because they can see what a talent he is, he has just had a little bad spell. From a football perspective I think he gets in Liverpool’s team, Man United’s team and at a push he could get really good game time in Arsenal’s team.”
