Liverpool have made a breakthrough in their pursuit of Calvin Ramsay and the young Scotland full-back is on course to be their third – and final – signing of the summer.

The Anfield club have been in negotiations with Aberdeen for weeks over the 18-year-old, who was also a target for Leeds, and have brokered a deal that will see them pay an initial £4million with a further £2.5m in bonuses.

Ramsay, who was named Scotland’s Young Player of the Year last month, is expected to be given permission to travel to Merseyside in the next 24 hours to begin a medical and, providing there are no unforeseen circumstances, he will report from pre-season training in July.

Aberdeen had been determined to get a club record fee for the Under-21 international, who made 33 appearances last season, and Steven Gunn – the club’s Director of Football – along with Chairman Dave Cormack succeeded in securing a price in relation to his promise.

Ramsay, of course, will face a formidable challenge with Trent Alexander-Arnold Liverpool’s current right-back but he will get the opportunity to work alongside him next month, when the Champions League finalists headed out to South East Asia for their tour.

Liverpool have had a busy start to the summer, having landed Darwin Nunez from Benfica and Fabio Carvalho from Fulham and once the formalities are completed with Ramsay, that is expected to be the end of the club’s activity in terms of buying.

Many believe Liverpool need to add a midfielder – they were pursuing France international Aurelien Tchouameni but recognised it was difficult to add him, as he was eager to join Real Madrid – but that is not an area they will address for another 12 months.

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, two of the current squad, have contracts that run out in 2023 and, as yet, there have been no indications about whether either of them will stay on.

Jude Bellingham, the Borussia Dortmund and England international, has long been linked with a move to Liverpool and the 19-year-old is well known to a number of the squad but there is no possibility of him leaving Germany any time soon.

The main focus now for Liverpool will be dealing with the players whose futures are in doubt.

Sadio Mane has his heart set on a move to Bayern Munich and the clubs are continuing to try to find middle ground for a fee for the Senegal international.
