Liverpool legend can’t quite believe what rookie boss is cooking up
Steven Gerrard says big pal Wayne Rooney is masterminding one of the greatest relegation escapes in history.
Aston Villa boss Gerrard reckons his mate is performing miracles in his first managerial job at Derby.
Rooney has been beset by enormous problems since taking the reins at The Rams.
The club plunged into administration, was docked 21 points along the way and Roo lost a lot of his players as rival clubs spotted easy pickings.
But Manchester United and England legend has refused to buckle with Gerrard saying: "Incredible. It's an incredible job, I think, for him to be in his first job, for him to have Derby where they are, what he's done and what he's potentially going to do.
"If he manages to pull a rabbit out of the hat and keep them in the league that will be one of the best jobs I've ever seen done.”
The Rams’ 3-1 midweek victory over Hull was their fifth in the last nine league games and puts them just four points off the safety mark.
Even Rooney says he’d rank it as his best ever achievement in the game should Derby haul themselves to safety.
Rooney said: “Keeping this club up would be right up there at No1 after all that’s happened.”
Gerrard added: "I've only got one word for Wayne Rooney, and that's not as a friend, it's just an honest opinion from coach to coach, and that’s ‘incredible.’ He's doing an incredible job."
Derby are still desperately trying to find a buyer as protracted negotiations with the administrators grind on and Gerrard hopes that’s something that can be sorted.
He added: "For Wayne's point of view, yes. Every neutral person in football wants to see the Derby County situation sorted out.
“It's none of my business. That's for Wayne and the people around him to sort out. I've got my hands full here with the Aston Villa gig, but from a friend's point of view and as someone who respects him immensely, I'd love to see him get the support that he deserves and needs."
